Our Minister - the Reverend Debra Faulk
On April 25, members of the Unitarian Church of Calgary voted to call the Reverend Debra Faulk as our next settled minister. This is the culmination of a year-long search process undertaken by the 7-member Minsiterial Search Committee. The Rev. Debra will begin her shared ministry with us this fall.
Debra is a life-long Canadian Unitarian who graduated from the Vancouver School of Theology in 2005. She was an intern minister at the North Shore Unitarian Church and the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa and has been the settled minister at Don Heights Unitarian Church for the past 4 years. Debra would bring to us exceptional experience in all aspects of ministry and church life as well as a warm, welcoming presence.
Her experience in parish ministry includes preaching, pastoral care, adult education offerings, organizational development, administration, social action, outreach, and interfaith involvement. She shepherded the Don Heights congregation through certification as a “Celebrating Diversity Congregation” (first in Canada). Her past involvements in congregational life include being Director of Religious Education, lay chaplain, Youth Advisor, RE teacher, on the Board of Directors, and a member of various committees such as Denominational Affairs, Worship, and RE. Her engagement in denominational affairs includes work with the UU Ministers Association Convo planning team, Goldmine Youth Leadership School, Elliot Institute, and UU Ministers of Canada.
Her references say: "I consider her one of the finest students I have taught during my 35 years of preparing students for ministry." "Debra is one of the best ministers in Canada. She is a real gem."
The Ministerial Search Committee says: "During the process of the phone interview, reference checks, and pre-candidating weekend, our enthusiasm and appreciation for her diverse skills, understanding of the Canadian context, poise and warmth has only grown. We think Debra has it all!"
Our Previous (Interim) Minister - the Rev. Fran Dearman
At the end of June 2010, we said goodbye to our Interim Minister, the Rev. Fran Dearman. Fran was at the helm of our church ship during the 2009-2010 interim year, during which we conducted a successful search for a new settled minister. Thanks to Fran, we had a great year of fun, laughter, and introspection. We wish her all the best as she docks in a new port, Tacoma, Washington, to serve the Tahoma Unitarian Universalist Congregation.
