Green Sanctuary Committee

Logo_green_size_3.jpgThe Green Sanctuary Project was launched by the congregation in 2004 to achieve accreditation from the Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth as a "Green Sanctuary." This was accomplished in 2007.

Green Sanctuary is now a standing committee. Its goals are:

  • To build awareness of societal environmental issues among Unitarians
  • To generate commitment for personal lifestyle changes
  • To motivate Unitarians to community action on environmental issues
  • To build a connection between spiritual practice and environmental consciousness
  • To build awareness of and rectify environmental injustices.

Green Sanctuary Committee Awarded an Alberta Community Spirit Grant

The Alberta Government has awarded the Green Sanctuary Committee another Community Spirit grant of $11, 655.24. This money has been given to the Green Sanctuary committee to do the following by April 30, 2011:

  • complete the conservation landscaping in the back garden
  • continue to organize and publicize their fine series of community environmental programs in conjunction with the Calgary Horticultural Society
  • install a small demonstration solar panel on our south wall with the assistance of Light Up the World.

We really appreciate the Alberta government's support for our community environmental education. The committee has done a fabulous job with our first Community Spirit grant last year and this second grant is a real vote of confidence in our programs. Many, many thanks to the Green Sanctuary committee and particularly to Gorham Hussey, Bernie Amell and Bob McPherson for all their hard work.

We welcome further members to this action-oriented committee where we believe Eco-Justice as well as Social Justice are key elements in our Unitarian Faith and commitments.

He has attracted a significant following for his articulate passion for local foods. Come join us for an evening with Chef Wade and refreshments on Friday September 24th at 7:00 PM. As we get closer to that date we may request an RSVP from you, if it looks likely we’ll be filling Panabaker to the rafters. Please mark your calendar now for the 24th and stay tuned for further information.

Bell Ringing to Support Action for Climate Change

On Sunday December 13, 2009 approximately 50 people joined with others worldwide in ringing bells, sounding drums, and blowing conch shells 350 times. 350 parts per million is what many scientists, climate experts, and progressive national governments are now saying is the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. Our purpose was to join together with others who love our planet earth to warn all people of the imminent danger of climate change and to call our political leaders to take action to promote positive action during the UN Climate Change Negotiations in Copenhagen.

A big thank you to all who contributed and to the Wild Rose Buddhist Sangha, who co-sponsored the event.
